The Western Columbine (Aquilegia formosa) is found in much of the west, usually in the mountains and near water. The delicate and unique recurved flower with long spurs is a sure cue that summer is in full swing. Sit and observe this flower and watch as one of it's highly specialized pollinators comes to visit. They have to have long beaks or probiscuses (tongue-like appendage) to reach the nectar at the end of the long flower tubes shaped into spurs. This flower is a woodland delight in the buttercup (Ranunculaceae) family along with anemones, monkshood, and clematis!
