In having such reverence for Earth, I've wondered how we can admire it's beauty while leaving it undisturbed. I think paintings are an incredible way to do just that. That is why I was inspired to create this series of mineral paintings, and share them with the world.
This is an archival giclee print of my original watercolor painting of Smoky Quartz Gwindel specimen. Originally painted with traditional watercolor materials and techniques, this print excellently reproduces the watercolor magic with its rich tones and quality. It is printed on an archival, acid-free natural paper made of plant cellulose and cotton using premium quality pigment inks. This print won't ever fade or age.
The name “Gwindel" comes from from the German word “gewunden", which means helicoidal, or twisted. This perfectly describes gwindel’s (also called twisted quartz) unique growing habit.
Gwindels are quite rare and can be found only at a few locations, in the world- the best coming from the central Alps (Aare Massive) in Switzerland and the Mont Blanc Massive (France and Italy). Not only are gwindels rare in the world, they’re also rare within their own pockets- which distinguishes them from other stones with a twisted habit. There’s a type of hematite called “hematite roses” where the stone forms a rosette. When a pocket of those are found, every hematite specimen will take on that shape because they are the product of specific environmental conditions. Gwindels, however, appear here and there within quartz pockets. There are many theories as to why gwindels form- some posit it is due to magnetism of certain inclusions in specific specimens, another is a heady “piezoelectricity” theory about polar charges of the stone. But, nevertheless, empirical evidence hasn’t been found to support any theory. For now, gwindels are a magical mystery of the Earth. And I’m good with that.
Due to the organic nature of this paper, prints may have very minor variations and marks from the fiber.
8"x10" prints are sent flat, on a foam core backing board will protective covering. Turnaround is typically 1-3 days.
