In having such reverence for Earth, I've wondered how we can admire it's beauty while leaving it undisturbed. I think paintings are an incredible way to do just that. That is why I was inspired to create this series of mineral paintings, and share them with the world.
This is an archival giclee print of my original watercolor painting of a raw Topaz gemstone specimen mined from the Thomas Mountains in Utah. Originally painted with traditional watercolor materials and techniques, this print excellently reproduces the watercolor magic with its rich tones and quality. It is printed on an archival, acid-free natural paper made of plant cellulose and cotton using premium quality pigment inks. This print won't ever fade or age.
Topaz is the state stone of Utah, and that is where this specimen I have recreated with watercolors is from! Topaz is extra special because it’s name may derive from Sanskrit- one of my favorite languages. In Sanskrit words are made up of “root” words with extra flare added, or just combining roots. Tapas is based on the root Tap (तप्) meaning "to heat, to give out warmth, to shine, to burn". The term evolves to also mean "to suffer, to mortify the body, undergo penance" in order to burn away past karma and liberate oneself, revealing why the Hindu and Buddhist spiritual practice of tapas involves asceticism. The term Tapas means "warmth, heat, fire". Back in the good ol days, any golden stone might have been called tapas, or topaz. As time went on and mineralogy became more refined, only this silicate of aluminium+fluorine was called topaz. It is found in many places all over the world, and has an impressive range of colors from clear to bright yellow and orange to blue. When seeing those bright imperial topaz of Brazil it’s easy to see why it’s name means fire or flame.
Due to the organic nature of this paper, prints may have very minor variations and marks from the fiber.
8"x10" prints are sent flat, on a foam core backing board will protective covering. Turnaround is typically 1-3 days.
